DISABILITY INSURANCE COVERAGE FOR WCMC-Q MEDICAL STUDENTS
This benefit is paid by Weill Cornell Medical College in Qatar.
Eligiblity for Coverage: Only medical students enrolled in WCMC-Q are eligible for this coverage. This coverage ends upon graduation and can NOT be continued past graduation.
What is Disability Insurance for WCMC-Q Medical Students? Disability Insurance covers a WCMC-Q Medical Student in case of long term sickness or the effects of an accident which do not allow the Medical Student to continue his or her studies.
When do the beneifts of long term disailbity insurance for the WCMC-Q Medical Students begin? From the time of the onset of the sickness or the date of the accident, there is one year waiting period, called an Elimination Period, before benefits begin.
How much are the long term disability benefits? If the Medical Student is still unable to continue his or her studies after one year Elimination Period, and is considered to be permanently and totally disabled, payment is made to him or her in the amount of USD 250,000. This is a lump sum payment to be used as needed by the disable person.
What is the definition of Permanent, Total Disability? Permanent, Total Disability means that the disabled person cannot continue as an active Medical Student in the opinon of a competent medical authority, i.e. "an individual who is qualified to perform or prescribe surgical or manipulative treatment." (A physician must be recognixed (licensed and chartered) by the state or country in which he or she is practicing, cannot be a relative and must practice within the scope of his or her license). This medical authority must conclude that Medical Student will never be able to resume the substantial and material duties related to medical studies.
When must the sickness begin or the acciende occur before the Medical Student to receive benefits? The onset of the sickness ro accident which causes permanent, total disability must occur while the disability policy is in effect. The onset of the sickness or the accident cannot take place before the policy went into effect or after the policy terminated.
Are the benefits for long term disaiblity paid no matter what the cause of the sickness or accident? There are exclusions for the payment of benefits for Permanent and Total Disabilty. No benefits will be paid under this Disability Insurance policy for any of the following:
- Suicide or intentional self-inflicted injury;
- War, declared or undeclared (Note that Terrorism or Acts of Terrorism is defined differently from war and is covered under this policy);
- An act of Terrorism involving the use or release of any nuclear weapon or device or chemical or biological agent, regardless of any contributory cause(s);
- While committing or attempting to commit a crime;
- Taking of illegal drugs, or addiction or misuse of prescription or non-prescription drugs;
- Alcohol abuse or addiction, or being under the influence of alcohol, as defined by the vehicle code of the state or country in which the accident has occured;
- Mental or nervous disorder;
- Subjective pain or other symptoms unless supported by objective medical findings;
- Pregnancy and pregnancy-related conditions including but not limited to fetility, pre-natal care, childbirth, miscarrage, abortion or post partum conditions;
- Pre-existing conditions.
What is a pre-existing condition? The last on the list of exclusions, pre-existing conditions, has a special definition. It is defined as a disease or injury for which medical advice, diagnosis, care or treatment including the use of perscription medication was recommended by or received from a licensed health care practioner during the 6 months immediately preceding the effective date of the Disablity Certificate, and will remain a Pre-Existing Condition until a 12 month period of being treatment free has concluded.
