DISABILITY INSURANCE: GROUP SHORT TERM
Group disability programs enable employers to offer insurance
protection to their employees that replaces a portion of their wages in the event
an employee becomes disabled and can no longer work. Such programs typically,
involve separate insurance coverage for short-term and long-term disability.
Group short term contracts can be provided to physician groups
with ten or more physicians and/or employees. Coverage can replace up to 70%
of the insured's weekly compensation up to a maximum weekly benefit. Typically
the duration of coverage is 13 or 26 weeks and should provide protection during the
interval before a group long term disability contract begins. Coverage can be
structured to provide a taxable or tax-free benefit.
Terms and conditions vary from contract to contract. Some
contracts pay benefits in the event of total loss while others provide coverage in the
event of total and/or partial loss.
